Original Face
She darted around a corner, pushing through the crowds as they obscured the automatic doors, lashing out with her crop whenever any of their unwelcome shapes drifted too close to her. At her back, the three Kiramagers—the arrogant yellow one, the childish red one, and the wounded blue one—staggered after her.
At her side, the mask of the Witch of the Stagnant Sea hung affixed to her belt, swaying with her swift movements through the crowd of the shopping centre, her slender shape soon lost amongst a forest of trees decorated with glitter and tinsel. Only they weren’t real trees, Yodonna thought, they weren’t like the northern forests that once she had called home long ago, the towering trees were once her ravens, Huginn and Muninn had nested; no, these trees were artificial, trite, mere imitations of that which she had once known.
Still with the three Kiramagers on her trail, she lashed out with her crop once more, spilling over the nearest tree in a shower of falling baubles and trailing tinsel, its descent exciting a domino effect amongst the remaining forest.
In her chest, she felt the rattle of that other power, her true self, as it yearned to break free, to slip from the chains that bound it, that buried its shape within her. She ignored those feelings, pushed them down, throwing open the doors of the shopping centre’s far side, rushing out into the bting cold once more, the three Kiramagers at her back.
Soon enough there would come a day when she would not be able to control it, she thought; soon enough there would come a day when it broke free from within, when her true presence was revealed unto the world—but not today.
Further, she ran, the mask swaying at her side.
